Zen Vouga: Quinta do Fundo de Vila

Zen Vouga, the Quinta do Fundo de Vila, was founded in 1744, although there are records of a Roman villa (of which there is no trace). It has about a total hectare of surface and is situated in a quiet and idyllic place.

In the year 2018 Quinta has been extensively renovated, with significant improvements in the generation of energy through renewable sources (photovoltaic solar panels and thermal solar panels, as well as heat recuperators) and the insulation of the dwellings (new doors and windows with glass double with thermal cut).

It is located on the south bank of the Vouga River valley and is composed of four dwelling buildings, old wine and olive presses as well as wine cellar, canastro, swimming pool and covered porch with wood oven, small kitchen and grill. The granite and wood of the region are the predominant raw materials on the walls and ceilings of the two oldest houses, which were recently rehabilitated.

The farm is located on three terraces, with three terrains adjoining it. It has three mines of water excavated in the stone and serve of a stream that passes right next to it. In front of the land below (large, approximately one hectare) is a small spontaneous forest, one of the most biodiverse in the region.

There is also a nice indoor swimming pool with toilet (with copper and zinc ionization, almost no chlorine), as well as a stone grill near the pool area, another on the porch, and a traditional wood-fired oven.

The farm is in a typical Portuguese village, modest and with few inhabitants, where traditional subsistence agriculture abounds. All this is located in a pleasant environment, in direct contact with nature.

Pets are welcome with prior agreement of the owner.

Zen Vouga is a place to relax and unwind, to reconnect and meet, to learn and develop, to source yourself and be happy.

Zen is life. In reality, there is nothing that isn’t Zen.

The ancient tradition of Zen has originated two thousand and five-hundred years ago in the foothills of the Himalayas, in what is today India, before heading to China, Japan and, finally, West, to the Americas and Europe. Its founder, the awakened being that we now know as the Buddha (a sanskrit word that means “the awakened one” developed a basic teaching and a meditation practice based on his own direct experience of reality, of the unity of his being and all other beings, of the world and all its phenomena as they are, here and now. He “awakened” to the entirety of life and to the the infinite interconnection of of all beings and things. This experience of true peace has freed him from the essential human illusion of separation, that ties and blinds us, and that originates incessant suffering in our lives and in the world.

These teachings are still very much alive to this day, having been transmitted from generation to generation by individuals who have discovered what he had discovered and have shared their experience with others.

The Buddha’s basic instruction to all who came to see him was to sit and practice looking into the nature of being. That practice, that we call meditation, is the basic instruction of Zen. And, just as before and always, Zen meditation is an act of freedom. Whoever you are, wherever you are, it is a radical, wild dive in the Heart of Life, in the Heart of the Vouga.

Yes, remember, your life (and all life) is Zen.
